You can actually thank Anne Richards for the "de rigeur" hunting appearance. I don't know if you remember, but she used to make sure that the press followed her out dove hunting every fall during election year. I think this had been an old tradition that had died out pretty much, but Anne brought it back to show that she was just as much of a good ole boy was the next yahoo. Anyway, when Bush ran against her, his handlers decided that he better prove he was just as much of a man as Ann Richards, so they sent him out dove hunting with a guide, something he'd apparently never done before. Somehow, despite all the handlers and guides, he managed to kill a bird of an endangered species.

That's hilarious! I don't remember that. I was already in San Diego when Richards lost to Bush so I missed some of the campaign details.
I think Kerry could shoot a 4-point buck and strap it to the front of his campaign jet and he still wouldn't get any of the Good-Ole-Boy vote.
It's one thing to go hunting during the primaries or early in the campaign but not with less than 2 weeks to go, as if he doesn't have anything better to do.

Then he would get a ticket, or thrown in jail, since it's not hunting season until now. But you are right, and the same was true of Anne Richards. That's why it was so pointless and funny that Bush had to go hunting back then.
