Blog versus Mailing List
Does this blogspot/blogger facility hold any real advantage over a standard mailing-list server?
At least from my point of view, the blogger Web interface is often excruciatingly slow.
Perhaps there is a way easily to see if someone made a new post to an old thread, but such is not apparently enabled by default. This wouldn't be an issue if we used a mailing list.
Is there any show-stopping disadvantage to using a mailing list?
I might be willing to set one up if there is any interest in moving to something better.

This is the first time I have been on a blog site, so pardon my ignorance. If I wanted to add a comment on one of the earlier dated postings, such as one of the political postings, is there anything to register a new comment has been added to it, or do you have to continue reviewing it?

Maybe it's from being in broadcast television for so long, but I kind of like the visual aspect of having a web site so posters can add visual aids to the posts.
It probably isn't as technically efficient, but it is more asthetically pleasing if that makes any sense.
To Michelle's query: you click on the comment, then hit Publish Your Comment, then refresh the home page after you go back to it, and it should be there.
I'm sure there are sites that are fancier than this one, but this one is FREE and very low-maintenance.

Well, to Curtis I should reply
(1) that a good mailing list has a Web interface that one may use if one wishes and
(2) that one may attach arbitrary HTML (with in-line image references) to an e-mail message.
I certainly don't mind the availability of a Web interface, but it would be really cool if there were an e-mail interface, and I should like very much to receive each new message via e-mail so that I don't have to go back and hunt for recent postings to old threads.
By the way, a good mailing list also provides via the Web interface a mechanism for searching by key word through the historical database of messages.

To me, this is more like a BBS than a mailing list. I get so many emails that I would probably never read this. I do think that there are some weird aspects to this interface, such as the fact that you don't see the comments on the page that lists the topics, but only if you click the view link. But in the end, we have inertia now, and I am willing to stick with this.

Here's my suggestion.
Let's get everybody onto this blog - I'm still waiting for Lark, Walter and Lila - they are having technical issues with their computers right now. Michele should eventually respond too.
Once we're all on this thing, then let's take a shot at switching over it's not working out.
I agree it would be better if it were more than just a couple of us posting, so hopefully everybody will start contributing.

I don't know if I should be posting this comment here or under breaking science news, but for the record, for the past almost twenty years I've been working with non-science people and have had to soak "it" up whereever I could or can. Right now, that means having conversations with Olympic and world skiers about loft, spin, and the nifty materials from which their high-tech gear is constructed. And internet/NPR/magazine articles, of course. [Speaking of which anybody read Brian Greene's new book? I just checked it out of our local public library but haven't read it yet.] So although certain aspects of this site may be lacking a little, thanks Curtis! for making it happen. I think this is great. And keep the science posts coming please. Go Sox.
