Eggs

I went to the end of our street and around the corner to buy eggs yesterday at a really pretty farmhouse. I knew folks were home because the key was still in the front door. I asked Petra if she had eggs today and she said she had to check. So we went through the drive to the chicken pen in the back and she stepped over the gate and walked up to the chicken shelter and felt around and came up with 8 eggs. All different colors and shapes (check out that one in the upper right corner) and fresh within about 8 hours. 8 eggs cost $2.11. I don't even know if that is expensive, but it seems like it is. Even at the cost, I will miss buying eggs from Petra when we leave here in two years.

There have been a lot of stories in the mainstream media (including the Today Show) about the pros and cons of trying to eat a locally-grown diet to save on transportation costs as well as the environmental impact of shipping the foods all over the country or world.
The general consensus from experts on the subject seems to be to supplement your food shopping with locally-grown products that are properly seasonal, so that you aren't trying to get local farmers to provide tomatoes in the winter when they really only grow in your region in the summer because the extra cost and environmental impact of trying to heat the tomato plants in the winter offsets any benefits of buying local products.
The message seems to be - choose your battles and you can save those eggs or tomatoes from being shipped hundreds or thousands of miles to another consumer. It won't necessarily save you any money, but it's an ethically-sound choice.
My only question is - how do the eggs taste? Do you notice any difference between your neighbor's eggs and regular store-bought eggs?

I don't notice any difference in taste, but it's fun to go to the farm. Thomas got to play with a very nice dog. A few weeks ago when I had both kids with me, we got to see baby rabbits. All this is within Thomas' walking distance.

Julia's photograph---culinary considerations aside---stands as a beautiful work of art on its own.
