My classic Germany moment

Yesterday we took the kids and a young neighbor to an open house at a horse farm outside a village about 30 minutes away from our house. I found myself watching Julia, our 11 year-old friend, ride a mechanical bull while listening to "Stars on 45" pumping through a loud sound system. Surreal. One can also take lessons in Country Western dancing, roping, and barrel racing here, in addition to riding lessons and trail rides. Weird.

While many Germans will publicly criticize or mock America for its foreign policy and cultural exports, they privately consume American music, movies and television shows more than any other European country. I am sure part of the reason is the large number of American military families living in Germany, but on any given day, you will hear Shakira or The Blackeyed Peas on the otherwise all-German radio stations, see an episode of Magnum, P.I. or CSI on TV, or notice that most of the movies at the cinemas are American with German subtitles.
I only really felt immersed in German culture when I went into the rural areas and the small towns, but even then, it felt like the Old World atmosphere was being manufactured for tourists like me.
