Thoughts on Lynchburg, VA?

Chris, the kids and I are once again on the move. This will be our 9th major move in 17 years together. Hopefully this will be the last. We are moving to Lynchburg, VA and I was wondering if any of you have any suggestions of things to do in the area or have even been to that area. It is a bit discouraging as I love big cities, and this is the antithesis of big, however it does seem like a good place to raise kids. At least they have an airport. The other plus they have is we will only be 3 1/2 hours from the ocean, which is refreshing since we have been very landlocked since Florida.

I have no experience with the area, but I wish you well in your move. The closest that I have ever come is Marrietta, GA, where I lived for about six months at the end of 1995. Although the Atlanta metropolitan area is, in my opinion, a big city, I was impressed by the ability of dense patches of tall trees to take the edge off of the urban feel. Also, the density of national and state parks was so great as to make going on a hike quite convenient.

Now that I am in the Denver area, I have really come to like the weather here. Mountain trails are reasonably close, but they are not so convenient as I should like, especially since it's really an effort to organize a family outing in my case. :^)

What's the landscape like in Lynchburg?

Thank you for the well wishes. Lynchburg is surrounded by beautiful rolling pastures where there seems to be an abundance of cows. Lynchburg is in a valley and about 30 minutes from the Blue Ridge mountains. We are excited for the outdoor opportunities. Lake Smith is about an hour away and has 500 miles of shoreline from what I understand. We have not had much opportunity to explore yet, but it appears to be as pretty if not more pretty than where we live in Knoxville.

I think you will like the area. I have flown over it many times, but never landed there. It doesn't look too small. The Cheseapeake and the Atlantic are also not far away. Plus you will get to experience the fabled "four real seasons." I always thought people from the North were full of crap when they complained about Texas not having this. I have to admit now that they were right. I have found that the mid-Atlantic terrain and climate are really a nice mix that I enjoy much more than I thought I would.
