Mac Alumni Spotted Dining in D.C.!
The fickle winds of fate converged last Thursday in the Washington, D.C. - area where I found myself eating dinner with not one but two old classmates. I was in town for a story for the Today Show, Michele had a business meeting in D.C., and Russell lives and works not far away.
We ate at a place that is trying to be the Chuy's of the East Coast. It's called the Austin Grille and it not only has Shiner on tap, but also Shiner IN the queso dip! Yummy.
There are no hubcaps on the ceiling, and neither of the Bush twins was getting drunk in any of the booths, but other than that, it did have a Chuy's aura about it. The restaurant is even sponsoring some local bands from D.C. at this year's South by Southwest (which both Michele and I will be attending along with Walter).
A lot of our conversation revolved around our chronic knee and foot pain - a sure sign that we are getting old. Kind of like when you ask one of your grandparents how they're doing and they run through a litany of their health problems.
If you're ever at the Austin Grille, Russell recommends the Pollo Guisado with mole' sauce. I would recommend the queso. I think Michele enjoyed the margarita more than the food.
A good time was had by all.

It's worth mentioning that I had a giant resentment against that restaurant for the longest time, because it was obvious to me that anything that's trying to be like something great never can be anything other than second rate. This sort of melded with time into my general view that anyone or anything that advertises Austin is just going to ruin it further (all hope is probably lost with the new comedy about Longhorn cheerleaders coming out soon).
Then I went through a phase were it was just too nostalgic for me to go there, and it would just break me up to be reminded of how much I miss all the old places. I finally got over this after my last visit to Texas, the first in several years, when I saw how Dallasified Austin has become.
These days I have a much kinder view towards Austin Grill. I don't think there's a music poster in the place from later than something like 1987. It's like going back in time, and only seeing the Austin you think you remember. And the mole sauce is a close as I've found north of Travis County to Fonda San Miguel's.
That I like it now probaby says a lot more about how I've changed than how it has. Sorta goes with the knee pain, I guess.

Supposedly "The" Amy is still involved, I would guess as an investor.
