Thomas Meriwether Kennerly

Hey,
There's a new baby in town. Thomas made a dramatic entry on Thursday, Sept. 29 at 7 p.m. My advice to laboring women out there... don't get to comfy with the start of labor upstairs, because getting down the stairs can be a traumatic experience that speeds up labor remarkably. That can make getting to car an ordeal, and having the baby in the hospital parking lot a possibility (although not a reality for me, hurray!!) I can say that it is hard to sit in the wheelchair when the baby is already crowning, though.
For those that like the stats, he was 9 pounds 5.6 oz; 21.5 inches long; and a basic fireplug shape with head, chest, and abdomen each 14.5 inches around. Clare is pleased in general, but could do without all that crying.
Both army and air force people out here are great and have been bringing us food. Patrick's sister got here on Saturday and is helping, primarily with Clare. So, that's the latest from Ft. Leavenworth :)

Congrats Julia!
Talk about breaking news hot off the presses. Wow!
And all of that hair on his head. He's got more hair than I do at this point.
Are there more little Kennerlys on the way? Or are you stopping at 2?

What a beautiful picture, and what a BIG baby! Glad you made it to the hospital. Good luck!

Congratulations!
Each of my last five children has been above nine pounds at birth, and Nicholas (number three) was above ten pounds.
None of ours has ever had so much hair as yours, though, Julia.

Oh, and how did you pick "Thomas"?
My parents named me not after St. Thomas the Apostle (the doubting Thomas) but rather after St. Thomas of Aquina (the great doctor of the Church).

Congratulations, Julia! He's beautiful. How are you feeling?
You know, I always fantasized about that kind of childbirth, a whoops-I-sneezed-and-he's-out kind of affair -- but no, my children had to be forcibly extracted from the womb after many hours of unproductive labor, quite literally kicking and screaming their disapproval.

Why Thomas? Well, he just didn't look like the other names we had ready. Paul, Charles, Robert, James, and Michael (not in that order)were the top 5, and none seemed to match his pointy little head :) The nurses were a little annoyed with us because we didn't decide until about 24 hours after delivery. Oh well, same thing happened with Clare.
Meredith, I have allergies to rival the next person, but I must say that no sneeze ever hurt as much as pushing Thomas out! Just because it was shorter, doesn't mean it was less intense. In fact, it was pretty freaky and I felt totally out of control. With Clare's much slower labor, (probably 20 hours to accomplish what was 4.5 with Thomas) I felt much more like it was something I was doing, instead of something that was happening to me. I hope that makes sense... Anyway, I'm very grateful that there was no forcible extraction. Given the choice between the two methods, I'll take what I was dealt any day!!

Did you have any pain relief, Julia? Your labor does sound like it was pretty darn intense. And going down the stairs? Yikes! I'm glad you guys are doing so well. Did I mention that Thomas is beautiful? :-)

My wife's experience is more like Julia's than like Meredith's, in that the first required a long time to deliver, but each of the subsequent children came out in rather short order.
For each of three deliveries (including the first two, for which she felt that pain relief was unaffordably expensive), my wife had no pain relief. In the case of the third such delivery, the anesthesiologist didn't arrive in the delivery room soon enough.
For each of the other three, my wife had an epidural.
My wife prefers to have pain relief, of course, but I should say that she remained perfectly stoic, silent, and composed (with only one brief exception), even through the *completely* natural deliveries.

I went without drugs for both Clare's and Thomas' delivery, by choice. With Thomas, drugs weren't even an option because, as I said, he was crowning in the parking lot and there was no time.
