Wish Them Luck

Just talked to Lark. He is sitting on I-10 with one of his dogs and Deline is in the car behind him with their other dog and as much stuff as they could take with them to San Antonio. They have evacuated their home in Friendswood to get away from Hurricane Rita.
Right now, the projected path would take Rita just west of Galveston as a Category 5 storm - stronger and larger than Katrina when it hit Mississippi and Louisiana.
Lark's home is about 30 miles inland but the real fear is Galveston Bay filling up with the storm surge and causing waterways like Clear Creek to swell and flood neighborhoods like Friendswood. And of course, there's always the wind and rain from the actual storm as it rolls through. Lark says his house is on one of the higher altitude streets in the neighborhood, so he is hoping for the best. Lark and Deline left this morning wondering if their house will be there when they come back. Lark said it was very eerie.
It will take them 6 to 8 hours to get to San Antonio because of all the traffic, but at least they got out in plenty of time.
Cross your fingers for them.

They are staying with Lark's dad indefinitely. Hoping to go back on Monday and Tuesday if possible.
Storm will do some damage in San Antonio and Austin too because it will probably still be a tropical storm as it passes through those areas.

Good luck Lark. I am planning to visit in just 3 weeks, so tell that ole storm to go somewhere else!

When I lived there, I remember one year when we had 3 hurricanes threaten, but the only one that came straight through town was a Cat. 1 that formed just offshore and blew in before most folks realized it. I remember being alone in my apartment and thinking what a bad storm it was; then it got better for a little while, then worse again. That turned out to have been the eye passing over. Later I found out that this had been a hurricane.

I remember we evacuated to Andy's folks' house in Houston for one of the others, and I think we went to Austin for the other one. Neither of these turned out to do much in Houston, but I think one did a lot of damage to Victoria. None of these were nearly as bad as the Tropical Storm that came through after I left and flooded all the bayous, or Allan that came though back in junior high days that blew out all the windows downtown.

All the old timers talked about how bad Camille had been in '60. None of that stuff in Clear Lake existed then, so it has never been through the worst kind of storm. Supposedly everything in that area was leveled. Since then, they've had several feet of subsidence due to ground water and oil being pumped out. Plus, a lot of the wetlands upstream have been developed (e.g. Friendswood), so the rain water can't be absorbed as well. So, the potential for a disaster has definitely loomed for some time. I don't think it will be as bad as New Orleans though; even Galveston is at least above sea level.

Good luck Lark. My family in Clear Lake and Beaumont are evacuating. Chris and I have only been through Hurricane Bonnie in '87 or so when we lived in Beaumont. It was only a 2, and we lost all of our food and electricity for a week. My Aunt and Uncle are looking for a place toward Dallas but everything is booked. What a crazy season.

I spoke with one of my friends this morning from Beaumont. Last night they were going to ride out the storm, but now that the eye may go over the Beaumont area they are leaving. The nearest hotel they could find was in Missouri and 600 miles away. This is making me appreciate Lynchburg a little more.

My sister Susanna is getting my folks house ready for the rain. The back bedroom where my grandmother lived has been flooding with just the regular thunderstorms that go through. Dad has augmented the soil in back for his vegetable garden over that last 30 years to such an extent that water flows through that little elfin door where the washing machine and dryer are. S has been digging trenches to the alley. I hope it works :) She said she couldn't buy jugs of water last night and that even gas was tight -- folks coming up I-37 from Corpus refuelling and whatnot. The nursing home where mom is staying (she broke her hip two weeks ago and is doing ok, considering her age) is filling into the hallways. There are folks from New Orleans and Corpus. I wonder if the folks from Corpus will go back now that the projected path goes to Beaumont? My guess is that they would stay just to be sure.
Good luck to Delene and Lark!!
