What's Your SDF?
If you need any more proof that Starbucks is taking over the very fiber of our society, you only need to go to the www.starbucks.com and click on the search function - choose retail stores - select 5-mile radius - and hit search. What you will get is the number of Starbucks stores within a 5-mile radius of your home or office. That figure is known as your Starbucks Density Factor (SDF).
Obviously the results will be drastically different if you live in a small town or suburb, but if you live in a big city like me, the numbers are kind of frightening. There are 33 Starbucks stores within a 5-mile radius of my home in Studio City (a neighborhood in Los Angeles). I typed in my old address in downtown Chicago and there were 87 stores within a 5-mile radius!
I'd be curious what your SDF is in other parts of the country.
And no, I was not paid to shill for Starbucks on this post. I'm just curious.

This was too funny. I entered my address in Biloxi MS and had to increase the radius to 50 miles to find a Starbucks. It was in a SuperTarget in Mobile, Alabama. I changed my search and just entered MS. There are 8 Starbucks in Mississippi, and one coming soon. The good thing is that there are plenty of family owned businesses out here. The closest coffee place to the base is just outside one of the gates and is called Joy of Coffee, and it's owned and operated by a nice woman named Joy.

I am jealous of you Julia. Chris and I are about as anti-chain as you can find, and Knoxville is a chain laden city. Anyhow, I found one Starbucks in a five mile radius, and 5 within a 10 mile. Pretty scary for a "small" town. I miss Chicago area dining!!

There are, apparently, 14 Starbucks retail stores within
five miles of my house. Although I haven't checked it out
yet, I have heard that there is wireless Internet access
at every Starbucks. Perhaps I should take my laptop down
to Starbucks some time, order some ridiculously expensive
drink, and surf the Web for a while.
On second thought, maybe not. I have wireless Internet
access in my house, and I doubt that my wife would
appreciate my abandoning her to the savages while I pretend
to be an average guy with real leisure time. Besides, I
almost never drink coffee. :^)

I live in Cincinnati and there are 9 Starbucks in a 5 mile radius. Not to mention about 4 other coffee places within 3 blocks of my house

Keep in mind that a 10 mile radius covers four times as much area, and a 50 mile radius 100 times as much area as the baseline 5-mile radius. So for example in my case, there were 17 within 5 miles, and 97 within 10 miles. Ninety-seven sounds like a lot more than 17, but the SDF as Curtis defined it is pretty close: 17 for the 5-mile radius, and 24 (=97/4) for the 10-mile radius.
