Who are We?

The exchange between Julia and Doug under Doug's beautiful daughters' photos reminds me that even though we are slightly connected through this blog site, a lot of us still don't know much about where we live and what we are doing right now. Please take a few minutes to let us know important things about you that we may not know. I wouldn't recommend any specific addresses or phone numbers since this goes out all over the world, but at least place of residence and occupation would be a good start.
I'll go first.

I am living in Studio City, a neighborhood of Los Angeles, and working at NBC for The Today Show. I produce segments for the show which means I'm responsible for one chunk of the show per day whether it be a live interview or a taped piece or whatever.
I moved here because my wife, Kyung, got a job as a reporter at KNBC, the local NBC affiliate about a year and a half ago.
We don't have any kids, but we do have a dog named Mocha and just bought our first house which is no small feat in Los Angeles. I have no idea how we will pay the mortgage every month, but it's nice to have our own home for the first time.
I see Walter every year in Austin and somehow I manage to see Lark about every 6 months at soccer games, Vegas and in Texas, but I'm pretty hit and miss with everyone else. Also just had a great time seeing Russell and Carol on New Year's Eve.

Curtis you are right. Here's my thumbnail:

I live in Alexandria, VA, with my girlfriend of the last 14 years, Carol. We have two cats, Leo and Tigger. We bought our townhouse in 2001, and moved in just a few weeks after 9/11, wondering if it had been the right thing to do, but so far things have been pretty good. We picked this spot because it was as close as we could find in the crazy DC housing market to halfway between our jobs, which are on opposite sides of the Washington Beltway. Carol's an economist who does things like help the Navy figure out how much retention bonus they should pay their pilots to keep them from going to the airlines after their tours, and the Public Health Service figure out how they can incentivize their personnel system to encourage better recruitment and retention of the kinds of folks who are first responders in a disaster. Po did a good job of describing what I do in his book, so I won't elaborate here, except to add that the best explanation I've come up with is we fly millions and millions of space missions over and over again in our computers, so that we hopefully find out all the problems and fix them before we launch them.

My sister still lives in Austin, so I see Walter every time we're down there, which is usually every year. I make it to Houston for work a little less frequently, and usually manage to see Lark. Somehow, I manage to see Michele quite a lot, between her traveling here and me to the Bay Area. We finally got to see Kyung on TV when we visited Curtis and her a few weeks ago! Jimmy came down to the Naval Academy recently, and we had a great time catching up. Turns out we both are into sailing. I also own 1/6th of a small airplane, but don't get to use it as much as I would like, at least in part due to the airspace restrictions here in the DC area.

I live in the Denver, CO, area, but I work an hour away at
Ball Aerospace in Boulder. I write software for a living.
The software that I write runs on a spacecraft and controls
the special telescopes that the spacecraft uses to determine
    it's orientation.

My hobbies include the philosophy of science, Catholic
theology, European history, and keeping my wife happy.
Right now, I'm on a Roger Penrose kick. I'm starting off
    with The Emperor's New Mind.

I have six children, three of each kind. The oldest has
lived more than 14 years, and the youngest was (in a sense)
    born yesterday.

My wife, who studied physics and math in her undergraduate
days and who studied adult education in graduate school,
stays at home and runs the school for our children.

My house is quite small, noisy, and jam-packed with stuff
and kids. I try to remember that even if my standard of
living is lower than most of my peers, it is higher than
    most of the world.

As if to prove that last statement, I just bought an Apple
Mac G4 PowerBook. I haven't had an Apple computer since the
Apple II. I stayed away from Apple after it migrated to the
evil closed architecture of the original Mac. In the mean
time, I became a GNU/Linux guy. Now that free software
(Darwin) is the core of Apple's latest operating system (OS
X), I have decided to give Apple another chance.

This is a great non-controversial post. I have kept up with a few of you through Christmas cards, but have not seen any of you for 15 years or more, except Edith who showed me some wonderful sights in Boston and the New England coast.

I married Chris, some of you know as Sean 16 years ago. We have lived in six states and I am a master of the move. Chris is an analyst for Bush Beans and we live in Knoxville, TN. We have a great view from our back deck of the mountains, and generally like Knoxville as far as a small towns go. I love to travel, play sports, hike, cook and read. Chris and I packed a lot of travel and living in until we took the plunge and decided to have children. We have two kids. Caleb is 3 1/2, very adventurous, smart and funny. We also have Jessica who is 8 1/2 months, sweet and very strong willed. We have found a very different pace of life with the kids.

I was an accountant in my previous life in the health industry, but stay home with the kids now. I may go back to work when they are in school but may try more of a creative path. I loved accounting, but was a slave to the job. I never get back to San Antonio as I do not see my parents, but make it to Beaumont outside of Houston at least once a year. My favorite place we lived was Chicago (would go back if we could), and my favorite place to visit is New York and St. John's Island. All in all life has been great and so different from the dark times I had in high school. I am grateful to those of you who helped me out of my situation back then though through moving out and rides to work. Wishing you all a wonderful 2005.
