Hey, I just returned from voting in Biloxi, MS. I took my friend Rocio, a recent US citizen, and her mother who is visiting from Panama. Pilar just wanted to see US democracy in action. She was surprised that there was no line. Between 80% and 90% of Panamanians vote in their elections. Voting takes place on a Sunday, so as not to cause conflict with the work week. Schools are the venue, and each classroom is utilized. Voters call ahead or check the web to see which classroom in which school is theirs, depending on their address. And it's still a mob scene. Popular vote decides each election. I forgot to ask if a simple majority or more was required. It is interesting to hear about the difference.

That is interesting Julia. I voted early in TN, and there was about a 30 minute wait. I will be interested to watch the news and see how that compared with actual day voting. In TN, approximately 30% of registered voters voted in early voting. No matter who you support, I think it is great that more people seem to be taking an interest this year. Is anyone in favor of having a popular vote decide the Presidential election vs the electoral college. To me it seems every vote would be more relevant in this day and age. In states where the candidate wins by a landslide I feel it would be frustrating to be voting for the loser. If there were a national popular vote, I think every voter would feel more empowered with his or her vote.

I echo Michelle's sentiments. I went to work late today to cover election results, so I spent much of the day driving around and during errands (after I voted of course), and everywhere I went, there were lines to vote at the various polling places.
That's pretty good considering California is not considered to be "in play" by the two parties because it is so heavily Democratic.
No matter who wins, it's great seeing so many Americans geting interested enough in the election to go out and vote.
Did anyone have any problems voting or hear of any snafus among your friends or family today?

In VA, the polls opened at 6am; when I got there at 7:45, the line streteched around the school. A woman who was just leaving said she got in line where I was now, and it took 1:10. That was about right; it took me 1:15. Nothing was in play here to draw the voters out, as VA was supposedly strong for Bush, and our Congressman faced a weak opponent. No Senate race, and no local issues. I was very surprised!
